16th BATTALION DLI & POW BOOKS APPENDIX PAGES

Site Introduction

This web site comprises supplementary contextual information, photographs, book reviews and documents relating to my 16th Battalion Durham Light Infantry web site at www.16dli.net.

I have researched a large amount of material which I believe is of great interest but doesn’t conveniently fit under the 16th DLI banner and these supplementary pages are the best solution to publishing that information. Also note that the search facility box below should work across all the sites

Contents:

DLI Fatal Casualties POWs and Gallantry Awards, 1939-45 (all battalions) arranged by consecutive 4433500-4477000 Army Number--a work in progress

Identity Parade: Unknown 16th DLI Soldiers. Over the years I have acquired quite a few portrait and group photos of unnamed 16th DLI soldiers. Somebody out there must have the exact same photo and will be able to name a father, grandfather, or now, as time marches on, even great-grandfather. If you can place a face, please get in touch. This pages has a convenient list of links to pictures of the many Unknown Soldiers featured on the main site.

Stalag Miscellany: Assorted Photographs, Documents and Information related to my on going consecutive listing of German POW Numbers.

POW Book Reviews. A small but growing selection of my reviews of books written by and about World War Two Prisoners of War. My particular emphasis will be to place these books into the context of my on-going consecutive POW numbers listing.

Large format 16 DLI War Graves Photographs

The illustration at right gives an indication of some of the more general DLI and POW material that will be placed on the site in due course. This item from The Sunderland Echo of 26/8/42 records three casualties of the Durham Light Infantry and one local RASC POW.

Pte John Burrell (4459163) who was from my home village of Thornley, Co Durham, was killed in action with the 9th Battalion, DLI on 29/6/42 and is buried in the El Alamein War Cemetery. For more on Thornley Colliery, see my associated web site: www.oldthornley.com

Pte J W Price (4463757), of Sunderland was also killed in action with the 9th DLI, on 17/8/42 and is commemorated on the El Alamein Memorial. Pte J W Smurthwaite (4464157) of the DLI was taken POW and eventually ended up at Stalag 344 in Germany, with the POW No 82142. Driver O McGahan of the RASC, who was POW in Stalag 4D Germany in early 1945, with the POW Number 227443.

For more on these POW numbers see the consecutive Stalag Numbers index page of my 16 DLI POWs site here.
