Sefton, L/Cpl Edward, 4464831, Stalag 7A in early 1945, POW No 125724. From Bradford. With the Battalion from its formation, enlisting 17/7/40. Initially, after basic training, in the Pioneer Platoon, HQ Coy from 12/40. With C Coy at time of capture, 6/12/43, attacking Point 430, near La Valle, Italy. Held at Feldpost Nr 31979, Spleto, northern Italy from 9/12/43 to 28/12/43. Arrived Stalag 7A Mooseburg 30/12/43; sent to work camp AK 3732, Hindenberg Strasse, Munich, on 23/2/44. In a letter home dated as received on 9/4/44 he remarks: 'I was captured Dec 6th so didn't get any of your Xmas mail. The day after I was captured I met up with six more chaps of the Coy who had been captured before me, so the seven of us have stuck together, so I have some pals and there's three more chaps from Bradford here...' In a letter marked as received on 28/5/44 he mentions 'eight lads of the Battalion who were captured just a while before me....' which suggests at least nine 16 DLI men, including himself, were at AK 3732, which was one of the larger work camps. Liberated at Stalag 7A by US forces on 30/4/45, and flown home by USAAF and the RAF, arriving on 11/5/45. Extra details from Brian Sefton.
