Yorkshire Evening Post 21/10/43, p 6: 'Pte Charles Siddle (30), Durham Light Infantry, a Leeds tram conductor, who was captured by the Italians in March this year, has arrived in Switzerland. His wife, who lives in Brian Crescent, Cross Gates, is of the opinion that he has escaped from the agricultural camp from where he wrote in Italy.'

Killed in US air raid of 8/12/43 on the railway station and viaduct at Aquila, which hit a train full of POWs being shipped to Germany. At least 34 British, POWs died, four of whom were DLI.
