'In April 1945, when the occupants of Oflag VIIB were being moved by the Germans, American fighter bombers attacked the column in error, causing grave casualties including Johnny whose right leg had to be amputated..' Evaded capture at Walrus, 5/40, 'escaped from the village only to be taken prisoner some days later whilst fighting with a mixed force at GHQ Hazebrouck.' Lewis and English 8 DLI p 19.
