The photograph above, of some of the 12/5/44 Allied POW casualties in Prague War Cemetery is courtesy of Mrs M Roberts, who is standing behind the gravestone of her grandfather, Pte Charles Moore, 16 DLI.

The POW casualty details for 12/5/44 and 21/7/44 on this and the following pages have been drawn from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database. However, this database does not list the several unidentified 12/5/44 POW casualties who are buried in Prague. In the photograph above, note the grave on the right of ‘A Victim of the Second World War, 12 May 1944.’

CWGC policy regarding POWs who died in captivity and who have no known grave is to record them on the relevant Campaign Memorial for the theatre of war in which they were captured: El Alamein, Medjez-el-Bab, Cassino, etc. For instance a British POW who was captured at Dunkirk in 1940, but who died with no known in grave in 1944 Nazi hands, would be commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial. Similarly, a POW captured in Tunisia in 1943, but who died as a POW in 1944, would be commemorated on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial. Intriguingly, there is at least one Dunkirk POW and one Tunisian Campaign POW who are listed on these respective memorials who died as POWs on 12/5/44 and their names are noted in the listing on the following pages.

These are the 34 named Allied POWs who died on 12/5/44 who are now buried in Prague War Cemetery:
