Pte William Rossiter Johns, 4456155, died on the 9/9/43, serving with 18th Bn DLI, aged 32. He was the son of Henry Pearce Johns and Catherine Jane Johns and husband of Mary Emma Johns, of Durham. He is buried in Salerno War Cemetery, Italy, grave reference IV E 31.

He is listed on the 1946 16 DLI Roll of Honour and was also originally listed as 16 DLI by the CWGC, since amended to 18 DLI, which was a short-lived 'Beach Brick' battalion at Salerno. The news item above right, which records his date of death as 12/9/43, is from the Durham Chronicle for 22/10/43.
