Flanagan (21) was killed in North Africa in March. He was previously employed by Palmers Hebburn Co Ltd. His brother, LAC John Flanagan RAF, was killed in an accident in Yorkshire and the third brother, Private Thomas Flanagan, Welch Fusiliers, was killed in Belgium.'

Hartlepool Mail, 30/4/43, p 2: 'Mr and Mrs J W Simon, of 63 Millbank Road, West Hartlepool, have received word that their son, Pte William Simon, DLI, is a prisoner of war in Italian hands. Pte Simon, who is 22, was reported missing on February 27 1943. He has been abroad since December last year. Pte Simon has a brother, James, serving in the Navy.'
Hartlepool Mail, 11/10/43, p 2: 'Now in Switzerland. Mr Simon, of 63 Millbank Road, has received a letter from the British Red Cross Prisoners of War Department inimating that his son, Pte William Simon, DLI, has arrived in Switzerland after being a prisoner of war in Italy for six months. Aged 22, Pte Simon is a former pupil of St Joseph's School. Before joining the Army two years ago, he was employed at the South Durham Works.'
