Previously served with 16 DLI in UK and Tunisia. Captured Sedjenane, Tunisia, 3/43.
Subsequently escaped from Camp PG 53, Italy after the Italian Armistice of 9/43.

Park, Rfn George W, 4469306. Died 19/2/44, serving with 13th Bn The King’s Regt (Liverpool), aged 24. Husband of May Park, of West View, Hartlepool, Co Durham. Rangoon War Cemetery, 4 D 5.

Short Pte R M, 4469340, Stalag 7A in early 1945 German POW No 125776. Enlisted 4 ITC, Brancepeth 12/41. 16 DLI Signal Platoon at capture, almost certainly the R Short of 49 Drake St, Haverton Hill, Billingham who was at workcamp AK 3732, Munich in 1944-45.
Hartlepool Mail, 8/1/44, p 2: 'Missing in Italy. Mr S Short, of 8 Grainger Street, West Hartlepool, has received news that his
brother, Pte Robert Short, DLI, has been posted missing in Italy since November 29. Pte Short was a bricklayer in the employ of Mr T A Young before he was called to the forces.'
Hartlepool Mail, 16/5/45, p 2: 'Back home. Pte Robert Short, formerly of 23 Water Street, West Hartlepool and now living at Billingham, has returned home after nearly two years in a German prison camp. As a signaller with the DLI he saw service in Africa and Italy, where he was taken prisoner. Another brother of two in the services, is a prisoner of war camp near Prague.'

Smith, Pte Leslie William, 4469343. Died 3/11/43, aged 23. Captured serving with 16 DLI. Born Middlesbrough, enlisted Yorkshire. Son of Francis William and Annie Elizabeth Smith, of Pickering, Yorkshire. Milan War Cemetery, Italy, VI B 2.
Died as POW in German hands from gunshot wounds, according to National Archives document.
