Most of the recruits in this DLI numbers allocation seem to have been enlisted and trained at Brancepeth from late 1940. The wide variety of eventual units served in is notable, representing all manner of reinforcement drafts, postings and wartime ‘exigencies of the service.’ The fate of any man in this listing could well have been the fate of any other but for a chance administrative whim. ‘There but for the grace of God....’

One of over 40 1st Bn DLI men who died on this date when their ship, the SS Shuntien, was torpedoed. The ship was bound from Tobruk to Alexandria with over 800 Italian POWs guarded, by over 40 soldiers of 1 DLI. The RN Corvette HMS Salvia which rescued over a hundred of those aboard was also subsequently sunk, with all hands. A small number of other survivors were rescued by the destroyer HMS Heythrop.
