One of over 40 1st Bn DLI men who died on this date when their ship, the SS Shuntien, was torpedoed. See: The ship was bound from Tobruk to Alexandria with over 800 Italian POWs guarded, by over 40 soldiers of 1 DLI. The RN Corvette HMS Salvia which rescued over a hundred of those aboard was also subsequently sunk, with all hands. A small number of other survivors were rescued by the destroyer HMS Heythrop.
