Pte Edward Sefton, 16 DLI, 1940 and 1943 Portraits |
Almost three years of Army service and one gruelling campaign in Tunisia separate these two portrait photographs of Pte Edward Sefton, 4464831, 16 DLI. The photograph at left is dated 1940 on the reverse and thus would have been taken in Scotland, either during or just after his basic training with the new 16th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. |

At this time Pte Sefton was assigned to the Pioneer Platoon of HQ Company. I would guess that the more informal photo on the right was taken in the summer of 1943 when the battalion was in North Africa and preparing for the Salerno landings of September that year. When he was taken POW, in December 1943, Sefton was serving in C Company, 16 DLI. Photographs courtesy Brian Sefton. |
